What can be stronger than an induction-hardened S45C gear?

A properly designed carburized alloy-steel gear can offer higher load capacity than an induction-hardened S45C gear, but the grade name alone does not prove an upgrade. Compare tooth-root bending and flank contact capacity under the same geometry, duty and rating method. Case depth, core properties, hardening pattern and finished accuracy matter. Confirm the limiting failure mode before selecting a replacement material or process.

Define what stronger needs to mean

A tooth can fail at its root or develop damage on its working flank. A higher surface hardness reading does not establish higher capacity for both modes. Compare allowable torque or safety factors using the same load spectrum, life target, lubrication and calculation assumptions.

For example, replacing a pitted gear requires checking contact conditions; replacing one with a root crack also requires a bending-fatigue review. Neither problem is solved by specifying a harder surface without examining the cause.

Compare the complete hardened condition

Carburizing a suitable alloy steel is one route to evaluate for a hard case supported by an appropriate core. For the existing S45C gear, establish the actual induction pattern, including whether the root region is hardened, rather than assuming all induction-hardened gears have the same condition.

The PairGears heat-treatment guide describes the process families. Changing the route can also change distortion and finishing requirements.

Localized induction heating of a toothed component
Induction hardening is localized; the specified hardened pattern and depth must match the design.

Request a rated comparison, not a material-only substitution

  • Provide both gear drawings, material condition, hardness and case-depth records.
  • State continuous and peak torque, speed, reversals, life and lubricant.
  • Ask for bending and contact checks using an agreed rating method.
  • Confirm finishing stock, final tooth accuracy, cost and inspection scope.

A material-and-process candidate is not a confirmed interchangeable product. Availability and production feasibility require review of the actual drawing.
