How many gears are in a truck transmission?
There is no single gear count for every truck. A transmission’s speed count describes its selectable forward ratios, not the total number of toothed wheels inside it. Eaton, for example, lists 10-, 13- and 18-speed truck transmissions. The correct answer depends on the exact transmission model and whether you mean forward speeds, reverse speeds or physical gear components.
Count ratios using the model specification
A 10-speed model offers ten forward ratios; a 13-speed model offers thirteen. Reverse ratios are normally listed separately. Eaton’s ratio tables show that different transmission families offer different counts and ratio progressions, so a general statement such as “all trucks have 18 gears” is incorrect.
Manual or automated shifting describes how a ratio is selected. It does not, by itself, establish the number of available ratios. Use the exact model’s specification or handbook.
Do not equate speeds with individual wheels
A gearbox can combine a main section with range or splitter gearing to provide additional ratios. These combinations mean that the number printed in a transmission’s speed description is not a physical parts inventory. Some gears participate in more than one selected power path.
To count actual gear components, use the exact assembly drawing or parts list and define the scope. Decide whether to include reverse idlers, integral gear teeth on shafts and auxiliary sections. A photograph of an exposed gearset is not enough to establish the complete count.
Identify the transmission before ordering a gear
Record the transmission model, serial or identification data, and the required part number. Then compare the applicable assembly drawing, tooth geometry and mounting dimensions. A truck make or a description such as “13-speed gear” is not sufficient to establish interchangeability.
